Although it has many similarities to Blizzard's Diablo, the game's unique setting and more customizable game play set this game apart from its predecessors.
Diablo and Diablo II may have been the first computer games to have given their players random dungeons and a computer role playing game that required a small amount of coordination. What Diablo and its sequels could not do is let players adventure in the mythological setting of Ancient Greece. Blizzard has not yet corrected this oversight, but another company filled the void by making a video game that had many similarities to Diablo and made improvements to graphics and game play. That game is Iron Lore Entertainment's Titan Quest Titan Quest's StorylineTitan Quest starts when one of the Titans from Greek mythology breaks loose from their prison in Tartarus, which wreaks havoc on the world above. The gods of Mount Olympus are in exile, but they can still be called upon to aid the player in a limited fashion. If a hero cannot restore the Greek gods to their rightful place, chaos will ensue. Iron Lore Entertainment created a class system for Titan Quest where a player can choose two main branches for his character and how he spends the advancement points determine the abilities of his character. In Diablo and Diablo II, these skills are unchangeable once bought, but a Titan Quest character can go back to an oracle and respecialize if he makes a mistake. Tromping Through the Ancient World in Titan QuestTitan Quest starts out in Ancient Greece, but as the game progresses, the hero travels through Egypt, Babylon, and China before a Titan Quest Character returns to Greece to defeat the Titan that caused the trouble in the world. Titan Quest is well researchad, and the game is educational as well as entertainng. The mythology is surprisingly accurate and the designers have made little embellishment to the stories for game purposes. Problems with Titan Quest's Game PlayThe game play is smooth and straight forward, but the final boss in the game is extremely tough, even on easy level. It says something that the few cheats for Titan Quest that came out shortly after the original release all centered around getting enough health or doing enough damage to the final boss in the game rather than worrying about the difficulty of other encounters throughout. It is easier to reach the end of Titan Quest than it is to reach its nearest competitors and online play options are available. It is a shame no commercial mmorpg has picked up on the rich fantasy world offered by Greek and Roman mythology. Gamers will have to settle for this dungeon crawling title from Iron Lore Entertainment to get their fix of fantasy gaming in a Greco-Roman world. Sources:
